FIRE SAFETY TIPS
The members of the Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Department provide the following safety tips, so that we may not have to meet you by "accident"
- Teach your children the telephone number to dial in case of an emergency, such as 911.
- Have your house number clearly visible from the street.
- Make sure you have one smoke detector in each habitable room in your residence.
- If you use any alternate heat sources that burn fossil fuels, you should install a Carbon Monoxide detector in your home. These alternate heat sources include wood burners, gas appliances or fireplace logs, coal stoves, oil burners, etc.
- Have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a chimney sweep every year. This will reduce your chances of having a chimney fire from a buildup of creosote and/or a faulty or damaged chimney
- Keep your furniture and drapes at least 12 inches away from heat sources such as electric baseboard heat.
- If you utilize heat tapes to protect your water pipes or roof from freezing, you should have these checked to insure the integrity of the tapes. Over the years, heat tapes degrade and cause an electrical fire. Never use extension cords for the power supply.
- Do not run extension cords under carpets and do not overload the capacity of the cords. Do not coil the excess cord up in a coil, as it will heat up. If you MUST use and extension cord, make sure it is the appropriate length.
- When cleaning out your coal or wood stove, place the ashes into a metal container. Place the ashes OUTSIDE away from the residence.
- Do not run your vehicle within your garage without proper ventilation, as you run the risk of being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes.
- Develop a fire escape plan with your family. Identify a meeting place outside the residence.
- Remember STOP, DROP & ROLL
